IS IT TIME FOR AN OIL CHANGE?

If you want your vehicle to last you as long as possible, it’s important to change your oil regularly. When you’re ready for an MA oil change, come to Ray’s Auto Service, where you can rely on the best care for your vehicle. But how do you know if it’s time to change your oil? Here are a few handy guidelines to follow so you always know when it’s the right time to get a MA oil change.

CONVENTIONAL OR SYNTHETIC OIL?

Before you go ahead and schedule your oil change, you’ll need to know if your car takes conventional or synthetic oil. If you are unsure if your car needs synthetic oil, check the owner’s manual. Typically, older cars use conventional oil, while newer and high-performance vehicles take synthetic oil. Even if you have only put conventional oil in your vehicle in the past, your car or truck’s performance may benefit from switching to synthetic oil. Check out our earlier post about the benefits of using synthetic oil.

HOW MANY MILES CAN I GO BETWEEN OIL CHANGES?

Once you know which kind of oil you need for your car or truck, the next question is, how often? That depends on the type of oil you use. Conventional oil should be changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles or three months. Vehicles that use synthetic oil can go much longer between oil changes; the recommended range is 7,500 to 15,000 miles. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended interval for your specific make and model.

WHAT IF I DON’T CHANGE MY OIL?

If you go too long without an oil change, you run the risk of irreparably damaging your engine. If the oil turns to sludge, it can no longer draw heat away from the engine. With nothing—no film or barrier—between the various metal parts moving past each other in the engine, the engine overheats.

It’s important to change your oil filter regularly as well. In addition to lubricating the parts of your engine, the oil also collects the bits of crud that build up inside the engine. If the filter becomes clogged, dirty oil gets pumped back into the engine, keeping it from effectively lubricating the engine.
